Attributes of the past are taking up more and more space in current designs. Vintage typography is widely used as a marketing tool.

Although generally considered outdated, elements from the past are increasingly taking their place in current designs. Vintage typography is absolutely no exception to this rule. It is, in fact, widely used as a marketing tool. We invite you to discover it in its modernized form.

Vintage fonts : what are they ?

So, the term typo is short for typography. Indeed, this word refers to the art of assembling characters to create sentences where the letters have a permanently fixed form. Typography is based on the choice of font and character types.

Retro typography comes in various forms that define it. Letterpress printing is a printing technique using the principle of relief. As for character design, it’s a form of typography dedicated to creating fonts.

Finally, lettering involves manual drawing with characters. Like everything qualified as vintage, retro typography refers to different designs stemming from typographic creativity of the old days.

Vintage typography can refer to either text composition or its printing. The former uses movable type. These are generally made of metal alloy. As for the latter, it uses assembled characters and laid out.

The arrival of computers has been particularly significant for retro typography. Indeed, DTP (Desktop Publishing) has allowed the transition from archaic processes to the preparation of documents for printing using computers.

Retro typography : an effective retro-marketing tool ?

Retro typography is currently used in branding design by many companies. One can easily find typography in the form of old characters and past processes on signage panels and brand signs.

Better yet, vintage fonts are no longer only used for text composition or printing. They are becoming increasingly important in digital writing, especially in website design.

Old typography is one of the many retro-marketing tools. It uses nostalgia to draw attention to a new product or service (generally modern). Through this strategy, the brand establishes a certain trust between itself and its audience.

That said, one must know how to use retro-marketing to avoid a grotesque and overly traditional result. Depending on your objectives, you can use it to build a partially or 100% retro universe.

Being 100% retro isn’t inherently bad, but it might limit your audience. Indeed, it’s likely that the impact will be significant only for those already interested in the vintage universe. On the other hand, partial retro leaves an opening that allows even the biggest lovers of modernity to become interested in the old era.

Vintage typography : a true source of emotions

The emotional reaction provoked by old typography is actually subliminal. In fact, the brand somehow shows the public that it understands the past and still finds it interesting. While the majority of companies rush to use modern typography, finding businesses that bring the good old days back to life immediately makes a difference.

Thus, retro typography creates a kind of bridge between generations. By combining modern products or services with old designs, it allows each era to find its place. This also provides an excellent opportunity for older people to discuss with younger ones. Typography may seem insignificant, but it can be a great source of memories.

Moreover, using vintage typography gives you a chance to build loyalty among customers of all ages. It also commands admiration and encourages past generations to make your brand a reference, a company that appreciates the old era at its true value.

Vintage typography : modernity’s best friend ?

So, the trend of vintage typography might seem like a threat to modern typography. But it’s not. Even though retro marketing is a strong strategy that all brands should consider, its use doesn’t suit all situations.

Moreover, in some cases, staying in a purely modern dynamic is more effective. Nevertheless, while retro typefaces are not always appropriate, they combine perfectly well with everything modern.

Because old fonts have a bold and particularly well-crafted character. Furthermore, in the world of fashion, a vintage look always catches the eye. It makes a difference, recalls good taste, authenticity, and the creativity of the old era.

Because the current success of vintage typography lies in its ease of enhancing modernity. But, whether through its colors, its volumes, or its graphics, there’s a strong sensation that’s immediately conveyed.

Indeed, branding design of websites is the perfect example of the retro/modern association. Whether it’s an e-commerce site, a blog, or a newspaper, a contrast is created. And it’s from this contrast that the interest of one and all is born.

Consequently, we suddenly find ourselves faced with two diametrically opposed universes. But instead of this being problematic, their marriage is simply explosive. So, in the end, vintage typography takes older generations on a journey and reminds new ones of their heritage. Thus, it doesn’t turn back time, but evolves with the past.
